100-Mile Challenge Profile: Ginger Roberts Print

Born into a military family, Ginger Roberts moved around quite often, but considers Tennessee to be home. She recalls spending a lot of time outdoors, camping and hiking, with her family. It even became a fond tradition for her family to hike each Christmas Day. Now, at the age of 58, Ginger hikes every 4 or 5 days, which she says brings her true peace with herself and the world. For Ginger, it is the journey - not the destination - that matters the most.

Charitable Contributions and IRAs Print
For anyone who is required to take a distribution from his or her IRA, that is, anyone who is over 70 years of age and has a traditional IRA, there is good news.  As part of the "Fiscal Cliff" legislation, the provision for making a "Qualified Charitable Distribution" was renewed, and distributions made before January 31, 2013 can be made and not recognized as income on the taxpayer's 2012 tax return.  For more detailed information, contact your broker or personal tax professional.
 
Highlighted Trail: Emerald View Park Print
Created in 2005, Emerald View Park is Pittsburgh's newest regional park. Overlooking downtown Pittsburgh, it is located in the neighborhoods of Duquesne Heights, Mount Washington, and Allentown. The Park combines existing parks and green spaces with what was once heavily mined, denuded and dumped upon land. For Pittsburgh and the more than 1 million people who visit Mount Washington every year to see the iconic view of downtown Pittsburgh and her three rivers, the 257-acre Park offers a mix of playing fields, playgrounds, lawns, views and trails.

She Took the Challenge, Will You? Print

Raised in Indiana in an Amish/ Mennonite community, Deb Watson's closest experience with hiking was getting lost in cornfields; she reports that going walking "for fun" would have been considered crazy! However, at the age of 56, and living now in Lancaster, PA, Deb has found a passion for hiking, one which she says facilitates her closeness to nature.

Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame - 2013 Nominations Now Accepted Print

Do you know someone who has made a significant contribution to the Appalachian Trail (A.T.)? The Appalachian Trail Museum in Gardners, PA invites the hiking and trails community to nominate worthy individuals for induction to its "Hall of Fame."  Nominations can include anyone who should be recognized for an exceptional and positive contribution to the 2,181 mile footpath that passes through fourteen states, from Maine to Georgia. Nominations for the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame will be accepted now through Thursday, February 28, 2013.

Once again, the KTA Trail Care Program will be 'all over the map' in 2013, bringing volunteer know-how, commitment and enthusiasm to Pennsylvania's network of hiking trails at a location near you! Hard work (usually) and a sense of accomplishment (always) is the give-and-take of the volunteer experience at a KTA Trail Care event. Occasionally, as well, an evening cookout takes the conviviality at the end of the day up a notch.

Winter weather is upon us, and for animals and people alike, that means hibernation. If you love hiking, don’t let the winter months deter you from enjoying all the beauty the season has to offer. Many trails transform into solitary, snow-covered landscapes with breathtaking scenery, overwhelming silence, and glimpses of wildlife that are not present in during warmer months. The lack of leaves on the trees makes distant views possible from even low elevation vistas.
