NEW! Hybrid Event: New in 2023 is the hybrid work/fun event! Those who come to help with trail work for any portion of the weekend are welcome to join us for a hike on Sunday morning.
WHERE TO MEET, LODGING:

Camping location: R.B. Winter State Park campground, Sand Spring/Keystone Road, near Mifflinburg PA 17844 (40.99218, -77.18467), Union County. Just off PA-192, about 18 miles west of Lewisburg. We have sites 38, 40, 42, and 44 AND WE ALSO NOW HAVE 46 DUE TO THE AWESOME TURNOUT!!!
Morning meeting location/time: same as above (near campsites), 7:45 AM. We may reserve a park pavilion for meeting use if adverse weather conditions prevail. Parking is available in the extra car parking lots encircled in purple on the map below.

Lodging/Camping amenities: R.B. Winter State Park has graciously provided sites 38, 40, 42, and 44 (AND NOW 46, TOO!) (encircled in red on the map above), starting Thursday night, for volunteers. Someone will be at the campground by 5:00 pm to assist you if needed. We can have up to 5 people per site, and extra cars will receive a parking pass. Tent, hammock and car camping welcome. You are welcome to reserve your own campground site at the prevailing rates for your own tent/camper. Sites have a fire ring, lantern pole, and picnic table. Modern flush toilets and showers available, less than 300’ walk. Potable water is available at stand-alone water spigots on the opposite side of the road from our sites, nearest 38 and 42. There is a dish-washing station at the shower house. Opportunities to relax in your off-time abound. For example, the nearby Halfway Dam lake has a beautiful beach and swimming area, and there’s the exhibits at the Environmental Learning Center.
Cell phone coverage: Coverage at the campground is non-existent. There are certain nearby known coverage spots one can drive to. Coverage on the trail and roads getting there can be VERY spotty.
Food/Drink: Generally, bring your own food, drink, and cooking supplies. See FAQ (link) for recommendations. For this event, Amy/Kristin will be preparing meals for Saturday and Sunday breakfast (coffee and donuts, granola bars or muffins) and Saturday supper (a hot meal with meat and vegetarian options with drinks and a dessert). Please list any allergies or dietary restrictions on sign-up.

ABOUT THE EVENT:
Work days: Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday.
Sunday hike: The event leaders are offering a Sunday hike option. Route/mileage/difficulty TBD. There may still be a crew or two working Sunday morning, but participants are welcome to hike instead, and enjoy the fruits of their labor!
Description of work: MST State College Region Managers Kevin Busko and Jason Davis will be scouting the trail in April. Work areas will focus on MST Sections 10 and 11 between Poe Paddy and R.B. Winter State Parks. There may be sections that need DR mowing, brushcutting, diverting of water, freshening of painted blazes, as well as some chainsaw removal of blowdowns.
Mid State Trail: The Mid State Trail is a ~527 km / 320-mile hiking trail. It is the longest and wildest footpath in PA. In this area, it is a mix of beautiful views and natural features, with plenty of elevation change. Paper maps/guide are available for purchase from the MSTA website, and the trail’s most updated information is available digitally through the FarOut app. It is one of the 18 state forest designated hiking trails and is blazed orange.
Notes: Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact Jenn Ulmer, KTA Manager of Trail Maintenance and Training, at ulmer@kta-hike.org or 570-854-8316 with any questions, or Volunteer Leaders @ statecollege@hike-mst.org / Kevin Busko @ 814-386-8728 / Jason Davis @717-681-4795.
****You’ll want to complete the trifecta and join us working on the Mid State in the Everett Region May 18-21 and Tioga Region June 8-11!***
