--Trail Work Details--
Work days:
Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday >3pm.
Description of work:
From Pennel Run northeast to PA-402, and on the Painter and Bear Swamp loops, there are blowdowns, brush, and blazing.
We carpool to trail locations; please let me know if you are not comfortable riding with others or driving on gravel forestry roads. From camp, drive times should be in the 5-30 minute range.
Thunder Swamp Trail System:
The Thunder Swamp Trail System (PDF map) is in Delaware State Forest, in southern Pike County just north of the Monroe County line, and it extends into Pennel Run and Stillwater Natural Areas. Suitable for both day hikes and backpacking trips, the system consists of an orange-blazed main loop trail of 30 miles, plus 15 miles of yellow-blazed side trails to many natural features. The trail system was built in the 1970s by the Youth Conservation Corps and is now maintained by KTA, Pocono Outdoor Club and state forest volunteers. The trails cross streams, pass through wetlands, and are very rocky in many areas, so sturdy footwear is a necessity. You may encounter many species of Pocono Plateau wildlife on the trails. Near the northern end of the trail system is the site of the first tree planting in Pennsylvania.
Here's a description of the trails from Jeff Mitchell from October 2023: link
