EVENT #13: August 21-24, 2025

BUCKTAIL PATH / ELK STATE FOREST TRAILS

Picture
What we have planned
We'll be assisting forestry staff in clearing some of the hiking trails in Elk State Forest.

  • Work TBD! Hopefully we will be working on the continuation of the Bucktail Path reroute - plans are to take it across the dam at Sinnemahoning State Park, and wind its way toward the northern terminus of the Donut Hole Trail.

Elk State Forest offers some remote, rugged woods, far from the city. Come and disconnect while giving back to PA Wilds trails!

Take time to visit the gorgeous Wildlife Center in the park.

Don't miss the famous arch tree!
Amenities:
  • Flush toilets and campground showers are a very short walk from the sites
  • Electricity is available at sites 16 and 19
  • Sites 17 and 18 are  "walk-to" sites - there is a short ~70' distance to carry your stuff, but more privacy
  • Potable water is available in the bathroom at the camping area, and there is a spigot near site 19
You bring:
  • all usual camping equipment
Notes:
  • Check in with Al/Jenn when you arrive, and we'll find a site suitable for you
  • You may have to share a site with fellow KTA trail volunteers

OR:
Make your own arrangements
  • You're welcome to procure your own lodging in a campsite at Sinnemahoning or nearby

Important notes:

Cell phone coverage: Coverage at the park is VERY spotty. There are drive-to locations nearby with fairly good service.

Food/Drink: Generally, bring your own food, drink, and cooking supplies. See FAQ (link) for recommendations. Please list any allergies or dietary restrictions on sign-up.
Tony may cook a scrumptious dinner one night, and we might opt for dinner out another night (Dutch treat). Watch for the pre-event email (Mon/Tues) for details.

What else to bring: For more general information about the Trail Care Program and suggested packing lists, see KTA Trail Care FAQ page here.
Notes:
Please contact Al Germann, KTA Trail Care Coordinator for PA Wilds, at [email protected], or Jenn Ulmer, KTA Manager of Trail Maintenance and Training, at [email protected] or 570-854-8316 with any questions.

 --Trail Work Details--
Picture
Work days:
Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday >3pm.

Description of work:
  • TBD
  • We carpool to trail locations; please let me know if you are not comfortable riding with others or driving on gravel forestry roads. From the campground, drive times should be in the 15-30 minute range.

Trails:
Elk State Forest has fantastic, georeferenced, hiking maps on their website here. However, the Bucktail Path map has not been updated since the reroute of the southern portion from Lick Run Road area to its new terminus at Brooks Run Road. KTA assisted with rehabbing the existing trails for the reroute, as well as digging new trail, during our 2024 Trail Care weekend.
