Map/directions to campsites: goo.gl/maps/eoAvztfZFe2PRYWm8

Lodging/Camping amenities: KTA has arranged for free camping for volunteers at Hickory Run State Park Campground, sites 24-27 (encircled in red on map above). These sites require driving through the majority of the campground, but they should be more secluded and quiet. Plus there is an overflow parking lot and we are within walking distance to the trail on which we’ll be working. Someone will be at the campground by XXX pm to assist you upon arrival Thursday night if needed. Tent and hammock camping welcome (you may have to share a site with fellow KTA trail workers), and car camping welcome in the parking area. You are welcome to reserve a campground site at the prevailing rates for your own camper, and they also have yurts and cottages. Potable water is available near site #23. Modern flush toilets and showers are available at the restrooms in between sites 12 and 16. There is normally a dish washing station outside the restroom. Electricity is not available at the campsites. Plan to charge any devices with your vehicle.

Cell phone coverage: TBD.

Food/Drink: Generally, bring your own food, drink, and cooking supplies. See FAQ (link) for recommendations. Please list any allergies or dietary restrictions on sign-up.

ABOUT THE EVENT:
Work days: Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday.

Description of work: We’ll be working primarily on the Shades of Death Trail (it’s really not that scary!). It’s the park’s second most trafficked trail. It’s a wet, rocky trail, with many roots, and social trails a-plenty. It’s about 2.5 miles in total, with an upper and lower trailhead. We intend to re-blaze the trail and decommission social trails. We may mitigate wet areas by adding aggregate in low spots, and possibly construct some boardwalks. We carpool to trail locations; please let me know if you are not comfortable riding with others or driving on gravel forestry roads. From the campground, drive times should be in the xxx-xxx minute range.

Shades of Death Trail: From The Outbound: “This beautiful hike follows along Sand Spring Run with views of waterfalls, rhododendron thickets and unique rock formations. The trailhead and parking are available by the park office or along PA 534 by the nature center and amphitheater. This trail is beautiful and seemed to change around every bend. Sand Spring Run flows alongside the entire trail. Rock formations and rhododendron mix with remains of a logging mill and dam to add to the gorgeous environment. This trail is only a mile long but navigating around the rocks will make it seem longer. The dam would be a great place to stop for a picnic and enjoy the scenery.”

Notes: Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact Jenn Ulmer, KTA Manager of Trail Maintenance and Training, at ulmer@kta-hike.org or 570-854-8316 with any questions.
