ABOUT THE EVENT:
Work days: Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday.
Description of work: We will be improving the Pinchot Trail System and/or side trails. Exact work locations are being scouted. There may be sections that need DR mowing, brushing, digging, freshening of painted blazes, as well as some chainsaw removal of blowdowns. We carpool to trail locations; please let me know if you are not comfortable riding with others or driving on gravel forestry roads. From the campground, drive times should be in the xxx-xxx minute range.
Pinchot Trail: The 26-mile Pinchot Trail loop (PDF map) was built by the Sierra Club’s Northeast Pennsylvania Group through Pinchot State Forest (previously named Lackawanna State Forest) in the southernmost corner of Lackawanna County. This loop trail is excellent for a beginner’s backpacking trip or for day hikes. There are a few steep grades and numerous creeks and swamps on terrain typical of the Pocono Plateau. A side trail leads to Pine Hill Lookout, with beautiful 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. The areas of Painter Creek and Choke Creek are particularly beautiful, and there is also good cross-country skiing on the trail. We will have paper maps for participants. It is one of the 18 state forest designated hiking trails and is blazed orange.
Notes: Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact Jenn Ulmer, KTA Manager of Trail Maintenance and Training, at ulmer@kta-hike.org or 570-854-8316 with any questions, or Volunteer Leader Jeff Mitchell jmitchmitch@hotmail.com / 570-441-2952.
