WHERE TO MEET, LODGING:

Camping location: Twin Streams Campground, 2143 Rt 287, Morris PA 16938 (41.59573, -77.29524), Tioga County. Just off PA-287 (just north of PA414/287 split in Morris), about 12 miles south of Wellsboro. We have reserved the “Guest House”.
Morning meeting location/time: same as above (near Guest House), 7:30 AM. Parking, encircled in purple below, is available near the Guest House. You do not have to enter the campground; there is a separate entrance, just south, for the Guest House. Watch for the KTA signs.

Lodging/Camping amenities: KTA has secured the “Guest House” facility at Twin Streams for volunteers (encircled in red above, unit 110). This house has proven a great communal area in the past for trail work crews. Check in time is 3:00 pm; someone will be at the house by TBD pm to assist you upon arrival Thursday night if needed. Inside the house are two bedrooms with a double bed each – available first come, first served for couples. There should also be room in the living room and porch to set up a cot or two. All participants will have access to the fully-equipped kitchen and living room, as well as the full bathroom, and can store tools and equipment in the screened-in porch. The house is climate-controlled. Tent, hammock and car camping welcome in the yard of the Guest House. Depending on turnout, we may end up reserving a tent site or two as well (these would be back by Wilson Creek: sites 501-8, 514, or 518-26 and would include a picnic table and fire ring and would involve a 500-1000’ walk to the modern bathhouse/restrooms.). Potable water is available at the Guest House or outside the shower house. You are welcome to reserve a campground site at the prevailing rates for your own camper. Check out time is 11:00 am, so we'll need to be packed up Sunday morning before we leave for trail work.
Cell phone coverage: We are verifying with the campground, spotty on roads and trail
Food/Drink: Generally, bring your own food, drink, and cooking supplies. See FAQ (link) for recommendations. Please list any allergies or dietary restrictions on sign-up.

ABOUT THE EVENT:
Work days: Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday.
Description of work: Work areas will focus on the southern half of the WRT. The southernmost eight miles need to be re-blazed. Brushing needs are evident, as well as some chainsaw removal of blowdowns. There is always sidehill benching to be done. We carpool to trail locations; please let me know if you are not comfortable riding with others or driving on gravel forestry roads. From the campground, drive times should be in the 10-45 minute range.
West Rim Trail: Located in the PA Wilds region, the WRT (downloadable PDF maps) is a ~30-mile hiking trail on the western rim of the PA Grand Canyon. It is one of the 18 state forest designated hiking trails and is blazed orange. Parts of the WRT pass through mixed Allegheny hardwoods, featuring white ash, cherry, and hemlock. In other areas, the trail winds along ridges of oak forest with abundant mountain laurel, and it also passes through boggy meadows near beaver dams. You will encounter some challenging topography when the trail departs from the edge of the main gorge to traverse side canyons. Best of all, the sections of the WRT along the main gorge lead to many outstanding vistas, some well over 1,000 feet above Pine Creek. We will have paper maps for participants.
Notes: Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact Jenn Ulmer, KTA Manager of Trail Maintenance and Training, at ulmer@kta-hike.org or 570-854-8316 with any questions, or Volunteer Leader Wanda Shirk @ wshirk49@outlook.com / 814-848-7944.
If you can stay in the area or plan to come back, adventures abound in the Pine Creek Gorge area. There are many more trails with waterfalls, quiet, forests, and exquisite views up and down the gorge, plus you can bike the 62-mile-long rail trail or kayak down Pine Creek in the spring. This event is also part of the PA Wilds Trail Care Challenge!
