Fall Hiking Weekend 2021

COVID-19 Notice
KTA values the health and safety of our members and participants. All attendees will have their temperature taken upon arrival. Participants are expected to wear facemasks indoors or in close proximity outdoors and maintain social distancing. Hand sanitizer will be available and there will be ample space for dining inside or outside.
Attendees must adhere to KTA's and the facility's COVID policies on the premises, and restrictions set by Hike Leaders while commuting to or on the trail.

​It’s time to leave covid behind and get back to hiking!

Northcentral Pennsylvania is trail central and the trails provide vistas, pass through open hardwoods, old growth forests and stands of hemlock.  Hikes with vistas, both easy and challenging with abundant wildlife are everywhere around you. With more than 21 trails covering 213 miles you’re bound to find a perfect trail for you and all hikes will be led by experienced and knowledgeable local guides.
During our weekend hiking adventure we’ll be staying at the best Western Lock Haven. The Best Western Lock Haven hotel provides award-winning service amidst the beauty of Pennsylvania's Wilds.
 
The Lock Haven Downtown area is represented by merchants and community leaders that are dedicated to making Downtown come to life. Located along the picturesque West Branch Susquehanna, Lock Haven offers a historic backdrop to a revitalized Main Street business district. Home to the Piper Aviation Museum and Lock Haven University; Lock Haven is also a gateway community to the Pennsylvania Wilds, providing outdoor recreation opportunities on more than 2 million acres of public land. With more than 21 trails covering 213 miles you’re bound to find a perfect trail for you.

Friday
12:00 PM – 8:00 PM: Event registration and hike sign ups
12:00 PM: Friday afternoon hikes begin
6:00 PM: Dinner on your own

Saturday
At the Best Western Lock Haven:
7:30 AM:  Breakfast (hikers also pick up bag lunches)
8:30 AM – 9:00 AM:  Full day and morning hikes depart
1:30 PM:  Afternoon hikes depart
At the Sons and Daughters of Italy lodge, Lock Haven:
2:00 PM – 2:45 PM:  KTA Board Meeting
2:45 PM – 3:15 PM:  Speak up! Help Shape KTA Strategy
            Discuss your views on KTA’s mission, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and/or threats with the new Strategy Committee.
3:30 PM – 6:00 PM:  KTA Council Meeting
6:30 PM:  Dinner

Friday, October 15, 2021 – Wear ORANGE
  1. MST-BEVT/McElhattan Loop w/ Great Eastern Trail Board – 5 miles – 2+ hrs - Pete Fleszar – Departs at 2:00!!! Easy – on Bald Eagle Valley Trail along Susquehanna River
  2. Tiadaghton, Camp Kline Trails Loop – DEPARTS AT NOON!!! 6.3 miles – 4.5 hrs - Jenn Ulmer – More Difficult – Roots, Rocks, elevation gain 1630’, Vistas galore over Pine Creek Gorge.
  3. Eagleton Mine Camp Trail – 4.5 miles – 3-4 hrs - Ted Ligenza – Departs at 1:00 - Moderate – from Eastern parking lot to Gobbler’s Knob (Roost) Linear with shuttle. Perfect for the Fall foliage.
  4. Stroll the Susquehanna - Friday evening, departing at 6:00, join others for an up to 4.5 mile easy walk along the lighted Lock Haven Levee Riverwalk at sunset – Julie Brennan.
 
Saturday, October 16, 2021 – Wear ORANGE
  1. Long Fork Loop from Hyner Run SP – 5 miles – 3 hrs - Bob Merrill – More Difficult – 1000 ‘ elevation gain, Vistas of Hyner Mountain area
  2. Eagleton Mine Camp Trail Eastern Loop – 10 miles – 5 hrs - Mike Haffley – Easy to Intermediate – Little elevation gain, single track, rolling hills, Bootleg Trail and RR switchbacks
  3. Bear Paw/Mid State Trail Loop w/ optional brewpub stop – 3.3 miles – 2.5 hrs - Jenn Ulmer – Easy hike through woods above Ravensburg State Park
  4. Lick Run Loop/Donut Hole Trail – 5 miles – 3 hrs - Ben Cramer – More Difficult – Well graded wide path along beautiful Lick Run (some muddy sections) and forest trail – site of old CCC Camp
  5. Bear Swamp area of Sproul SF – 1-2 miles – 1-2 hrs - Lin Greenaway – Moderate – Easy walk around Bear Swamp learning about various plants
  6. Zindel Park Iconic Trails Loop – 10 miles – 5 hrs - Randy Gillen and Dave Bower – More Difficult – Enjoy incredible vistas from the ridge top as you hike iconic trails of the Lock Haven Watershed: Goat Path, Lightning Bolt, Laurel Trail, Fleming Way, Park Trail.
  7. Outer Limits Loop – 7.5 miles – 2.5 hrs - Jenn McConnell & Co. – More Difficult – Fast Paced – Very gradual (1000 ft) elevation gain. Beautiful forest trail and along Keller Reservoir and McElhattan Creek.
  8. Zindel Park West Side of Reservoir Loop – 6.5 miles – 3-4 hrs – Polly Chatterton & Kathy Gillen – More Difficult – Beautiful views of the Reservoir, lovely forest trail – Keller’s Bench, Black Diamond, Change up, Fernwood, and Kammerdiner to return – some rock hop stream crossings.
 
Expect perhaps 2 more hikes on the Lock Haven Watershed lands. This is home to well-known competitions such as the Megatransect, the Boulder Beast, and the Frozen Snot. Trails are not blazed or mapped so these led hikes will be a unique opportunity.

Sunday, October 17, 2021
  1. Mid State Trail Ravensburg North Loop w/ Great Eastern Trail Board – 7.5 miles – 4+ hrs - Pete Fleszar – Most Difficult – Scramble past seasonal waterfall on unmaintained Falling Spring Trail to MTB Trails over the top and return on Mid State Trail – Indian Path & old still site.
  2. Devil’s Tower Loop – 3.2 miles – 3 hrs - Frank Rohrer & Laurie Bower – Easy to More Difficult - Zindel Park, McElhattan Gorge trail, No Name and Park Trails – Caution Advised of sheer drop off near Devil’s Tower.
  3. Gamble Run/Mid State Trail Loop – 7.25 miles – 4.5 hrs - Jenn Ulmer – More Difficult – 2.4 mile warm up on Pine Creek Rail Trail, elevation change 2000’, gently then steeply, descend Shultz Fork then Gamble Run, rife with small cascades – numerous rock hop water crossings.
  4. Donut Hole Trail + old woods road - Whetham area loop – 8 miles – 5+ hrs - Ray Johnson – More Difficult – climb and descend south of Hyner – not a steep climb or descent - unique habitats, waterfalls.
  5. Donut Hole Trail – Carrier to Oak Ridge Roads – 6 miles – 4-5 hrs - Tim Fenton – Moderate – Fairly flat with Fibber’s Vista and Rare old Butternut – Linear w/ Shuttle.
  6. Link, Jump Up, Kane’s Way Trails – 4 miles – 3 hrs - Ben Cramer – More difficult - Loop hike just outside of Lock Haven climbing to the ridge of Bald Eagle Mountain – great views over Lock Haven.
  7. Hyner View Trail Challenge/Donut Hole Trail Loop– 5 miles – 4-5 hrs - Brad Myers – More Difficult – Start at SPECTACULAR Hyner View, descending and re-ascending to Hyner View – Fall Foliage on Display!!!
  8. Jews Run Loop– 6 miles – 4-5 hrs - Mike Davis - Moderate – Find some hidden Jewels of Sproul State Forest – 2 Vistas only accessible with this hike – Mike has secured transportation for 10 hikers.
Activities on your own:
 
Bicycling (or walking):
o Bald Eagle Valley Trail – an approximate 7-mile (3.5 miles out and back) section of a rail
trail (remainder of the trail is under development and will ultimately connect with the
Pine Creek Rail Trail). This easy ride follows Bald Eagle Creek as it flows into the
Susquehanna River. Map available.
o Pine Creek Rail Trail – bring your bike and explore the southern terminus of the PCRT
out of Jersey Shore (12 miles) or start at the southern end of Pine Creek Valley. Map
available.
 
Sightseeing:
o Hyner View State Park – one of the most breathtaking vistas in PA!
o Loganton & the Amish – a beautiful ride through “Sugar Valley” where many Amish work
the fields and sell home-grown and hand-crafted items.
 
Wine Tasting:
o Oregon Hill Winery at Old Shoemaker Estate – enjoy wines from a local winery.
 
Shopping Suggestions in and around Lock Haven:
o Woolrich Company Store – gear for the outdoor lover (coupon available)

Antiques, Crafts and Collectibles Seeking:
o Christmas in the Barns – This annual crafts extravaganza takes place October 16 &17
(9am-4pm both days) at the Clinton County Fairgrounds in Mackeyville.
o Market Haus & Grove – browse through antiques, crafts and collectibles in this
warehouse full of vendors.
 
Art & History Lovers Tours:
o The Station Gallery – The Clinton County Arts Council operates this former train station-
turned-art gallery, featuring a new exhibit each month. The current exhibit features
various media from artist David Becker.
o Piper Aviation Museum – open daily, this museum houses Pennsylvania’s State
Airplane, the J-3 Piper Cub, and pays tribute to the life and legacy of William Piper, Jr.,
the Henry Ford of aviation! Admission.
o Heisey Museum – Operated by the Clinton County Historical Society, this house
museum highlights the county’s history from the past century and beyond. Groups by
appointment.

(Includes 2 continental breakfasts, 2 bag lunches to take on your hikes or adventures and one informal dinner at the nearby Sons of Italy social club. Friday night’s dinner is on your own in one of the charming and quaint local eateries in historic downtown Lock Haven. All hikes and the Saturday evening program is included.)
