--Trail Work Details--
Work days:
Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday >3pm.
Description of work:
Mid State Trail:
The Mid State Trail is a ~534km / 332-mile hiking trail. It is the longest and wildest footpath in PA. In this area, it is a mix of beautiful views and natural features, with plenty of elevation change. Paper maps/guide are available for purchase from the MSTA website, and the trail’s most updated information is available digitally through the FarOut app. It is one of the 18 state forest designated hiking trails and is blazed orange.
The Woolrich Region extends from remote ridges and valleys, over the mighty Susquehanna River, past its eponymous historic mill village, over the Allegheny Front to the mouth of Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon. This specific section north of I-80 meanders through laurel thickets, crossing backroads (on which one is as likely to spy an Amish buggy as an automobile) on its way to Ravensburg State Park. Sights are the Merrill Linn Trail loop, former Rauchtown FIre Tower, and a River of Rocks (thankfully off-trail).
In your "off" time, you can hike the "other" Thousand Steps Trail- the trailhead is right in Ravensburg State Park! It goes straight up the mountain (to a nice flat 3.3-mile loop) in 0.6 miles/ 550' of elevation. Link to myhikes.org here. Some info on the geology of nearby Castle Rocks and Big Rock Spring is here.
Age Requirements:
Minimum: 14 years old and up (all minors must be accompanied by a guardian) unless otherwise noted. For safety purposes, minors will never be allowed to work alone or with just one other volunteer, unless it is their guardian.
Maximum: no maximum age! If you can hike a couple miles over rough terrain, we can find a task suitable for you!
Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday >3pm.
Description of work:
- Failing plank bridges have been identified in the area of the MST to the southeast of Ravensburg (MST Section 12). Luckily, they are fairly close to roads. Work here will involve carrying materials and tools to the project site, working with our bridge expert Tom to install the new bridges, and carting out old bridge sections. See pictures in slideshow below.
- Mid State Trail Association volunteers and KTA staff are scouting a possible reroute near Woolrich (MST Section 14) that will keep the trail off the road. Stay tuned for news on progress and possible work here.
- Other various trail work on the MST and/or side trails as defined by further scouting.
- We carpool to trail locations; please let me know if you are not comfortable riding with others or driving on gravel forestry roads. From the campground, drive times should be in the 35-45 minute range.
