ABOUT THE EVENT:
Work days: Friday and Saturday approximately 8-4, Sunday 8-noon. Camping available starting Thursday.
Description of work: There is a laundry list of items that crews have not gotten to in the last couple of years. Work areas will focus on clearing heavy blowdowns and brushing/lopping the trail in the Pennel Run and Stillwater Natural Areas, as well as rehabbing a couple of side trails if time permits. We carpool to trail locations; please let me know if you are not comfortable riding with others or driving on gravel forestry roads. From the camp, drive times should be in the xxx-xxx minute range.
Thunder Swamp Trail System: The Thunder Swamp Trail System (PDF map) is in Delaware State Forest, in southern Pike County just north of the Monroe County line, and it extends into Pennel Run and Stillwater Natural Areas. Suitable for both day hikes and backpacking trips, the system consists of a blue-blazed main loop trail of 30 miles, plus 15 miles of red-blazed side trails to many natural features. The trail system was built in the 1970s by the Youth Conservation Corps and is now maintained by Pocono Outdoor Club and state forest volunteers. The trails cross streams, pass through wetlands, and are very rocky in many areas, so sturdy footwear is a necessity. You may encounter many species of Pocono Plateau wildlife on the trails. Near the northern end of the trail system is the site of the first tree planting in Pennsylvania.
Notes: Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact Jenn Ulmer, KTA Manager of Trail Maintenance and Training, at ulmer@kta-hike.org or 570-854-8316 with any questions, or or Volunteer Leaders Shira Blady & Brian MacNamara @ bladysh@gmail.com / 267-970-1280.
