Description of work:
Work areas will focus on the southern half of the WRT:
  • The southernmost eight miles need to be re-blazed
  • Brushing between Steel Hollow Trail and Dillon Hollow
  • Rebenching north of the Gundigut Trail intersection

We carpool to trail locations; please let me know if you are not comfortable riding with others or driving on gravel forestry roads. From the campground, drive times should be in the 10-45 minute range.

West Rim Trail
:

Located in the PA Wilds region, the WRT (downloadable PDF maps) is a ~30-mile hiking trail on the western rim of the PA Grand Canyon. It is one of the 18 state forest designated hiking trails and is blazed orange. Parts of the WRT pass through mixed Allegheny hardwoods, featuring white ash, cherry, and hemlock. In other areas, the trail winds along ridges of oak forest with abundant mountain laurel, and it also passes through boggy meadows near beaver dams. You will encounter some challenging topography when the trail departs from the edge of the main gorge to traverse side canyons. Best of all, the sections of the WRT along the main gorge lead to many outstanding vistas, some well over 1,000 feet above Pine Creek. We will have paper maps for participants.

If you can stay in the area or plan to come back, adventures abound in the Pine Creek Gorge area. There are many more trails with waterfalls, quiet, forests, and exquisite views up and down the gorge, plus you can bike the 62-mile-long rail trail or kayak down Pine Creek in the spring.
