Join Keystone Trails Association for Spring Hiking Weekend, and explore the Laurel Highlands, a designated Conservation Landscape!
What to expect:
Our traditional Spring Hiking Weekend runs May 1- May 3, 2026, based out of the Historic Summit Inn Resort. The weekend features hikes, stewardship activities, bike rides, guest speakers, white-water rafting, and more. Each day activity leaders meet participants at the Summit Inn to coordinate carpools to activities. See the full agenda below, and select which activities you'll attend when you register.

This year, we are excited to announce “Give Back to the Outdoors Extended Weekend,” an opportunity to come a day early to engage in stewardship activities on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Space is limited to 20; learn more in the program lineup.

Activity registration with a meal plan closes on April 9; this is the last day refunds can be issued for activities and meals, too. Activity registration (without meals) closes on April 22 at 8 AM.
Where to stay:
We've secured discounted rooms at the Summit Inn through March 19, 2026. Book your room of choice by contacting the Inn directly at (724) 438-8594 or [email protected]. When you contact the Inn, be sure to say you are reserving through the “Keystone Trails Block.” This will ensure you get the discount. Leave your phone number if you get voicemail, or email the Inn; staff will call you back to complete your reservation. Reservations made after March 19 will be at the regular rate. If you need a wheelchair accessible room, please mention this when you call the Inn.
  • The Summit Inn is extending the block rate for the night of April 30 for those registered for Give Back to the Outdoors Extended Weekend; meals are on your own until Friday dinner.
  • If you’re looking to camp, Ohiopyle State Park is 20 minutes from the Summit Inn and offers a variety of options.
  • We expect programs to fill. Use the "Register Here!" tab (below) to view which activities have openings before booking lodging.
  • Questions about lodging refunds can be answered by the Summit Inn.
Who should attend this event:
Anyone who enjoys being outdoors is welcome to attend! You do not need to be a member of Keystone Trails Association (KTA) to join us. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about KTA and make new connections.

Give Back to the Outdoors Extended Weekend Riverbank Cleanup | 2-mile, moderate-pace, trash removal | 2:00-5:00 PM, Thursday
Ohiopyle’s Ferncliff Peninsula is one of the most-visited areas of the park. Flush with historic ruins and views of impressive rapids, it draws crowds. Nestled along the Youghiogheny River, the riverbank creates eddies that collect trash moving downstream. We'll conduct a land-based, riverbank cleanup to improve the trail corridor. Terrain will be rugged and potentially unstable. See the route here. Gloves, bags, and guidance will be provided. Wear clothing that can get dirty, including sturdy boots, long pants, and long sleeves. Heavy rain will cancel. When registering, select “Give Back to the Outdoors." Meet on-site: 100 Ferncliff Rd, Ohiopyle, PA 15470. Afterwards, head to the Summit Inn to check in to your room.
This activity is suitable for ages 10 and older.

Join us for a spring mushroom identification hike on the Ferncliff Trail as we wind through rich forest habitat along the Youghiogheny River. The forest is starting to wake up, and while fungi can be limited, there is still plenty to see and learn. We’ll walk at an observational pace, stopping to identify fungi growing on soil, wood, and leaf litter. Depending on conditions, we may encounter early-spring ascomycetes, cup fungi, jelly fungi, polypores, and crust fungi. Along the way, we’ll focus on how to spot fungi in the landscape, discuss key identification features, explore fungal ecology, and learn about the important role fungi play in forest ecosystems—even during quieter times of the season. See the route here. This outing is educational and beginner-friendly, with plenty of time for questions. While edibility may be mentioned when relevant, this hike is focused on learning and observation, not foraging. Weather-appropriate blaze orange clothing, sturdy footwear, phone or camera for photos, a hand lens, notebook, or field guide are suggested. You can find a book on mushrooms by your guide at KTA’s online store.
