Spring Hiking Weekend 2021

Back by popular demand - KTA returns to Wellsboro - Home of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon!
April 9-11, 2021
Picture
The Wellsboro area offers hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails from flat packed surfaces to rugged mountain terrain. Stroll the gas-lit streets of Wellsboro where you’ll find family-owned businesses offering personal attention to your needs.

Early in the 20th century, Wellsboro was the shipping point and trade center for a large area. It had fruit evaporators, flour and woolen mills, a milk-condensing plant, marble works, saw mills, foundry and machine shops, and manufacturers of cut glass, chemicals, rugs, bolts, cigars, carriages, and furniture.

Our base of operations is the Penn Wells Hotel.  Built in 1869, our Historic Penn Wells Hotel, located at 62 Main Street, is an iconic marker of downtown Wellsboro. The interior of the Hotel portrays an elegance of earlier times, with mahogany woodwork, deep colors, and a large wood-burning fireplace in the Lobby.  Every guestroom in our Wellsboro Pennsylvania Hotel is unique in some way, but the rooms are notable for their period architectural features, such as high ceilings and mahogany woodwork. Guestrooms and bathrooms tend to be smaller as was the norm in 1869.

The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon is a hiker's Paradise. Famously referred to as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, and scientifically known as the Pine Creek Gorge area of Pennsylvania, it is a must-do for avid hikers and nature lovers. The area’s most celebrated and publicized Trail, the Pine Creek Rail Trail, is a converted Railroad Bed that allows hikers to have an easy walk through the PA canyon along Pine Creek. This is a low impact trail with only a slight grade and it is handicap accessible.

Hikers will have a fabulous time discovering the many backwoods hiking trails that The PA Grand Canyon / Pine Creek Gorge area offers. The Black Forest Trail, a 42-mile trek, travels through both the Tiadaghton State Forest and the Tioga State Forest. Hikers get a one of a kind perspective of the Canyon area’s backcountry.

And if you want to discover the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon's cache of backcountry views, then you will want to follow the West Rim Trail. This 30 miler is a rugged, must do hike If you're looking for the real Canyon experience.

The more extensive Mid State Trail travels through parts of 5 State Forest areas and the Susquehannock Trail System is also nearby.

There will be many options for short hikes/ day hikes. These smaller side trails can be accessed throughout the Canyon/ Gorge area. The trails serve well for shorter, day hikes and some of these seldom-used hiking trails are certainly worth discovering during this weekend.
