​TRAIL LOVE: MICHAUX EDITION  May 31 - June 2
Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Gardners, PA
 --Trail Work Details--
Trail work sites in collaboration with:
* Michaux State Forest * Friends of Michaux State Forest * Pine Grove Furnace State Park * Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park  * Friends of Kings Gap * Mountain Club of Maryland * ​
TRAIL PROJECTS:

Hearth Tender Trail Building Crews 1, 2, and 3:
  • Requires 10-minute drive to Trailhead. We hope to use vans to transport volunteers (multiple trips)
  • Total hiking should be less than a mile
  • Michaux State Forest staff will instruct volunteers on sustainable trail building methods
  • This is an exciting new trail system being built just east of Pine Grove Furnace State Park
  • Volunteers will use tools such as fire rakes, pick mattocks, pulaskis, hazel hoes, shovels, and garden rakes to hew new trail treadway
  • Once the treadway is defined, it is further smoothed out by cutting roots and vegetation
  • Water diversion swales may be dug

Buck Ridge Trail Signs & Water Bars​​:
  • Requires ~25 minute drive to Kings Gap Environmental Education Center
  • Friends of Kings Gap volunteers will lead trail volunteers
  • Work will include siting new sign placement, digging holes, placing signposts, filling holes, and leveling
  • Volunteers may also assist Friends volunteers with water diversion structures

Appalachian Trail Clean-Up Crew:
  • Requires ~20-minute drive to Trailhead. We hope to use vans to transport volunteers (multiple trips)
  • Total hiking should ~3 miles (1.5 miles out and back)
  • Veteran KTA Trail Care Volunteers will lead a crew on the A.T. north from Pine Grove Furnace
  • Work will include dismantling illegal campsites and fire rings
  • Also likely handsaw work, tossing fallen limbs, and possible vegetation trimming with loppers

Koppenhaver Trail Step Building​:
  • Requires ~30 minute walk to trail work site within Pine Grove Furnace State Park
  • Veteran KTA Trail Care Volunteers will lead a crew constructing interlocking steps on a steeper section of trail
  • Work will include transporting raw materials and tools to site, assisting crew leader in constructing steps
  • If time allows, this crew may also work on some rock steps in another location
