Thunder Swamp Trail

The Thunder Swamp Trail System is in Delaware State Forest, in southern Pike County just north of the Monroe County line, and it extends into Pennel Run and Stillwater Natural Areas. Suitable for both day hikes and backpacking trips, the system consists of a blue-blazed main loop trail of 30 miles, plus 15 miles of red-blazed side trails to many natural features. The trail system was built in the 1970s by the Youth Conservation Corps and is now maintained by Pocono Outdoor Club and state forest volunteers. The trails cross streams, pass through wetlands, and are very rocky in many areas, so sturdy footwear is a necessity. You may encounter many species of Pocono Plateau wildlife on the trails. Near the northern end of the trail system is the site of the first tree planting in Pennsylvania.

Free camping permits are available from the district forest office. Primitive campsites should not be located within 50 feet of the trail or within 300 feet of buildings, roads, or water sources. Fires are prohibited during the fire seasons, from March 1 to May 25 and from October 1 to December 1. Access the Thunder Swamp Trail System via PA 402, about 14 miles south of Exit 30 off I-84. The main parking area is on the left.
