by Ed Lawrence, KTA Trail Care Coordinator It’s been a busy Trail Care season, but it’s not over yet, with 3 events left on the calendar. The Tuscarora Trail will be the focus of the September 13-16 weekend. Volunteers will be heading to the south-central part of the state, continuing KTA’s commitment to help the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) maintain Pennsylvania’s section of this challenging long-distance trail. The crew will be based out of the extremely nice PATC cabin at Little Cove under the experienced leadership of Ben Auer.
On Saturday, October 6, there will be a Code Orange event at Gifford Pinchot State Park, in York County, in cooperation with the Friends of Gifford Pinchot State Park. Camping will be available in Group Camping Sites D,E, and F on both Friday and Saturday nights, and the Friends Group will be hosting an afternoon cookout for all Code Orange volunteers. The last Trail Care of the year will take place November 1-4 on the Bucktail Path in Elk State Forest. The Elk State Forest staff has again made available the historic Brooks Run Fire Tower cabin for the event. There is no better way to transition from summer into fall—or to honor the hiking experience—than to join one of the volunteer crews working on this trail.
